Friday, February 3, 2006 as we were eating dinner I saw you have a small seizure. I dismissed it as the chills, and losing your balance; not even fathoming that you would ever have seizures. Since we had been trying to stop using a binky this week I had assumed you stayed on the floor for a minute out of a need for attention.
I had been holding you for the majority of the day because you were having a rough time replacing the comfort you found in using a binky. After dinner we planned to go to the mall to walk around. You had a quick shower and we got both you and Kate in the car. Once we arrived at the mall I quickly ran in with Kate, due to the cold weather. Rich was going to get you and meet us inside. After several minutes, you and dad entered the mall. Rich said it took him a while because you were acting weird and would not respond. We took you to the nearest bench and tried getting you to respond. It scared me quite a bit because you had a distant look and were biting your tongue. I offered you soda, cookies, chocolate, fruit snacks, and anything else I could think of that I knew you would be excited to have. Nothing sparked any attention. After a few minutes of this, I tried to get you to walk around, talk to me, and respond in anyway to what I was saying. I held your hand and walked to a chocolate store to see if seeing the chocolate would spark any response. Up to this point I still did not know what we were experiencing was a seizure. You still were glazed and chewing your tongue at the chocolate store so I took you out to a bench and held you, a few minutes into this you threw up and let out a little cry but still not ‘my Gracie’. I called Kelly and explained what was going on and asked if she had experienced anything like this with the boys. She didn’t know either but said to call Dr. Nuttall. I called him and we went to the on call doctor.
On the way there we called Grandma Lewis, she seems to be able to diagnose illnesses and I was worried. She did not know either. I sat with you and Kate in the back seat and you threw up a few more times in the car on the way. After each time you looked a little more relieved and coming back to normal. By the time we reached the doctor you were weak but out of the seizure. We took you in and while I checked you in. Daddy and you looked at the fish tank, it had a ‘nemo’ and ‘dorey’ fish. We went back and the doctor checked you and then told us what you had had were seizures and that you had double ear infections. Throughout the day you told me your ears hurt but a kiss made them feel better. Dr. Nuttall had told me on previous occasion that if you had an ear infection you would cry and a kiss would not work. You are very strong to have had double ear infections and not be in more pain than you let on. You got a shot and a Sesame Street Band-Aid and on the way home we got you some popsicles, a binky, and soda. You relaxed all day Saturday and most of Sunday and many of your aunts and both grandmas called to check on you. You scared us all very much but seem to be back to being an active happy 2yr old.
Months later on May 12, 2006 you had another seizure. Grandma and Papaw Brossette were out for mothers day weekend and you had a bit of a fever. We were ready but still scared because we knew it could (and would) spike fast. We were at the Dollar store spending a $5 bill present Gigi (Great Grandma Brossette) sent you. It happened and we went next door to Kmart .(I really hate Kmart, but you are worth it) and got a fever reducer. We brought you home and had a picnic dinner in the living room so that you could sleep versus going out to dinner. I guess now what we know what can happen and how to help you, it is easier to deal with. Hopefully you will grow out of it (most children do around 4yrs old), I hate seeing you not full of energy.
